Septoberfest is an annual adult retreat that includes special workshops, sharing and discussion, relaxation, inspiration, singing, crafts, new friends, old friends, the out-of-doors, and FUN! Open to all 2009-2010 Registered Adult Girl Scouts.

This year's Cowgirl up! theme honors our great volunteers who step up, aren't afraid, and don't give up!

New event fee this year! Only $25!

(Event shirts with event logo are available at an extra cost.)

Event fee includes a Cowgirl up! bandanna and tote bag!

 

EVENT OVERVIEW

The event starts Friday at 6 pm with registration and an evening of crafts, SWAPS, and social time.

The onsite Girl Scout Store is open Friday evening.
 

Saturday is the big Workshop day, along with ceremonies, camp fire, and surprises.

After lunch group activities include  Cowgirl Up! Team Competitions.

The onsite Girl Scout Store is open early evening.

Saturday evening is the Casino Saloon with card games, line dancing,arm wrestling, and more!

Early Birds can participate in Grade-Level Roundtable discussion groups.

Sunday mid-morning includes brunch, celebrations and social time, and the event ends at noon.
 

Our Service Project this year will be to collect items needed by the McPaws Animal Shelter in McCall.

WORKSHOP DETAILS

Each workshop has a "min" and a "max". If we don't reach the min number, or we reach the max number by the time you register, we will move you to the next choice as indicated on your event registration form.

And, please note that a few workshops have a modest cost. Once we have finalized your workshop selections, we will collect any extra class fees when you arrive.


Beads, Beads, and More Beads (1-hour, min=5, max=20, no cost, Instructor: Lori Bennett)

Learn the basics of using pony beads for jewelry making and learn how to make your own paper beads. Handouts will be provided with many bead activity ideas. This activity is great for younger girls, and/or for older girls to each younger Girl Scouts.

Cake Decorating (1-hour, min=8, max=15, cost=$2, Instructor: TBD)

Learn the basics of cake decorating, including working with different tips, how to make a rose, petal borders, and helpful hints on cake making.

Ceremonies (1-hour, min=5, max=20, no cost, Instructor: Karen King)

A thirty-year veteran of the Seattle Girl Scout Council will demonstrate Bridging and Court of Awards ceremonies for Brownie leaders; Flag and Ceremony of Lights ceremonies for Junior leaders; and a variety of ceremonies for Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador leaders. Everyone will go away with handouts and eagerness to start the year with a few new ceremony ideas. This will be an outside workshop, so prepare for Mother Nature!

Craft Hodgepodge (1-hour, min=5, max=15, no cost, Instructor: Phyllis Vernon)

In this workshop, we will learn how to make lip balm, bath fizzy and seeded paper. These crafts are easy and will be fun to do with your girls.

Dehydrating Foods (1-hour, min=6, max=12, no cost, Instructor: Phyllis Vernon)

Learn how to dehydrate various foods that make fun snacks and are easy to do. These will make excellent snacks to take on hikes or backpacking.

Dutch Oven Cooking Part 1 (1-hour, min=7, max=20, no cost, Instructor: Calvin Wood)

Participants will learn about oven types, selection, care, seasoning, tools, utensils, heat control, tips and cooking techniques.

Dutch Oven Cooking Part 2 (2-hour, min=7, max=20, no cost, Instructor: Calvin Wood)

Students will prepare, cook for, and serve the Septoberfest dinner. Part 1 is not required.

Flag Retirement (1-hour, min=5, max=20, no cost, Instructor: Celia Maynard)

Learn how to properly and respectfully retire old, worn out flags and participate in a flag retirement ceremony. Handouts will be provided. This workshop will be outside.

Leave No Trace Camping (1-hour, min=6, max=15, cost=$2, Instructor: Toni Ward & Nancy Ward)

The Leave No Trace (LNT) program is designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts with their decisions about how to reduce their impacts when they hike, camp, picnic, snowshoe, run, bike, hunt, paddle, ride horses, fish, ski, climb or geocache. Participants in this class will learn the Leave No Trace principles, learn about the PEAK Program (Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids) and learn about the Bigfoot Challenge. This class will be part lecture, and then move into the field for some hands-on activities. Class participants will receive the LNT Plastic Reference Card Library that includes the new Geocaching reference.

Medicinal Plants (2-hour, min=5, max=15, no cost, Instructor: Neiless Cook of McCall)

Take a relaxing walk with Mountain Man and learn about the incredible variety of medicinal plants that exist right here on our very own council camp property. Bring a notebook or journal if you wish to take notes.

Mindful Leading (2-hour, min=8, max=5, no cost, Instructor: Pam Doucette)

This 2.0 hour in-person course provides Girl Scout leaders and volunteers enrichment and new resources that will enable them to be intentional in the way they deliver Girl Scout programs. Through Mindful Leading, we become authentic, confident, and intentional in our partnership with girls to bring out each girl’s individual leadership potential. The exercises we will engage in are fun and revelatory, include much sharing and laughing, and emphasize the positive influence we have on each other.
Attending this workshop will satisfy the Training Course 202 Requirement.

Mosaic Garden Stones (1-hour, min=5, max=15, cost=$2, Instructor: Terri Overlie)

Learn how to make a 9-inch round or square Garden Mosaic Stepping Stone. Stones will be made out of cement, and decorated with tiles, glass pieces, and rocks.

Nature Hike (2-hour, min=6, max=15, no cost, Instructors: Toni Ward & Nancy Ward)

Bring a water bottle, trail snacks, walking stick and dress appropriately for a 2 hour, 4 to 5 mile hike into Ponderosa Park on the Lilly Marsh and Ridgeline Hiking Trails. View wildlife, enjoy the scenery and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

Outdoor Camp Cooking Skills (1-hour, min=6, max=12, cost=$2, Instructor: Jody Harris)

Learn a variety of outdoor cooking skills other than Dutch Oven… Leaders will learn how to make a buddy burner, fire-starters, how to cook in foil, on a stick, and on a coffee can. Yum!

Photography (1-hour, min=5, max=20, no cost, Instructor: Calvin Wood)

Bring your camera and join your fellow shutter-bugs in learning tips to improve your technique and become a better picture-taker. Subjects to be covered will be: Composition, Rule of Thirds, Hot Spot, Air, Lines and Curves, Exposure and other tips.

Sand Candles (1-hour, min=5, max=20, cost=$2, Instructors: Jody Harris & Erica Nielsen)

Join in the fun of making sand candles at the beach.

Sign Language (1-hour, min=5, max=20, no cost, Instructor: Phyllis Vernon)

In this workshop, we will learn finger spelling and basic signs. And, we will learn how to sign the Girl Scout Promise and Pledge of Allegiance.

Traditional Girl Scout Songs (1-hour, min=5, max=20, no cost, Instructor: Gaye Young)

Don’t know “Taps, Make New Friends, Johnny Appleseed?” Join in the fun as we learn many Traditional Girl Scout Songs and Graces.”

Working with Older Girls (2-hour, min=6, max=20, no cost, Instructors: KC Driscoll & Meagan McArthur)

Based on results from our July survey of Older Girl Leaders, we will design a program workshop with your questions, concerns, and interests in mind. Join the council Program Team in exploring Girl Scout opportunities available for older girls, techniques and ideas to keep them engaged, tips on keeping your time with girls Girl-Led, updates on this year’s cookie program, Highest Awards, Destinations, journeys and much, much more. Expect to get up off your duff for some group work and role playing!
